In the fast-paced world of technology, a great leader’s role is to inspire hope, optimism, confidence, and a sense of purpose in their team. Technology is not just about systems and code; it’s about innovation, problem-solving, and making a meaningful impact. As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.” In tech, the “vast and endless sea” represents the boundless possibilities of innovation. A leader’s job is to help their team see that horizon and fuel their passion for the journey, not by directing every task, but by showing them the bigger picture and the potential they can unlock together.
However, inspiring hope is only part of the equation. A leader must also create the conditions for success by removing obstacles and providing the right resources and support. In tech, this means surrounding yourself with people who are smarter, more skilled, or more experienced in specific areas. A great leader doesn’t need to have all the answers but must foster a culture of collaboration, where everyone’s expertise is valued, and innovation can flourish. By empowering others to take ownership of their work, a leader creates a team capable of solving complex problems and pushing boundaries.
In my own career in technology, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who taught me the true meaning of leadership through their example. They showed me that leadership isn’t about control, but about lifting others up, clearing obstacles, and creating an environment where everyone can grow. They taught me that the best leaders surround themselves with talented individuals, giving them the freedom to innovate and succeed. As I lead my own teams, I strive to inspire the same sense of purpose and possibility, helping people not just to do their best work, but to yearn for the vast opportunities that lie ahead.
