As part of Smartlink’s Veterans Month initiative, we’re proud to spotlight Heath Williams, a United States Navy veteran and now a valued Project Manager on our team. Heath’s story is one of discipline, teamwork, and resilience, qualities that continue to drive his work and leadership today.
From the Depths of the Ocean: Serving in the U.S. Navy
Heath served six years in the United States Navy as an Electronics Technician, Nuclear Power–trained Reactor Operator. Stationed on submarines out of Bangor, Washington, he operated and maintained some of the most critical reactor and electronic systems in the Navy.
Life aboard an SSBN submarine was intense and demanding; tight quarters, long stretches underwater, and missions that required unwavering precision. It was an environment that shaped Heath’s mindset and work ethic in ways that still impact him today.
Lessons That Last a Lifetime
Serving beneath the surface taught Heath two things he still carries every day:

Self-reliance. On a submarine, you learn quickly to take initiative and solve problems before they become problems.

Team awareness. Every action affects the crew. Supporting the goals and efforts of the team is second nature.
These lessons formed the foundation of Heath’s leadership style, both in the military and now at Smartlink.

Heath credits his military experience with strengthening his ability to stay composed under pressure, a crucial skill in both submarine operations and project management. The Navy honed his ability to think ahead, communicate clearly, and adapt quickly, all of which align with Smartlink’s fast-paced, team-focused work environment.
Whether coordinating complex project details or supporting his team through challenges, Heath’s military discipline and adaptability shine through.
A Day of Reflection and Gratitude
For Heath, Veterans Day is deeply personal. It’s a moment to think about the people he served beside, those shared experiences, the sacrifices, the bonds that last a lifetime. It’s also meaningful to his family: his dad, son, and uncle all served in the Army, making the day a true family tradition of honor and service.
It’s a day when Heath reaches out to old shipmates and friends, checking in and showing appreciation for the journeys, they’ve shared.
Advice to Veterans Entering Civilian Life
Heath encourages fellow veterans to lean into the strengths the military gave them, discipline, adaptability, and teamwork. These skills translate seamlessly into civilian careers.
He also emphasizes staying flexible, keeping an open mind, and seeking support when needed. Transitioning isn’t always easy, but no veteran has to navigate it alone.
