Precision in the Air, Excellence on the Ground: Jason Harms’ Story

For two decades, United States Navy veteran Jason Harms served our nation with precision, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. From 1989–2009, he built a distinguished career as a Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Aircrew Linguist, expertly trained in Russian, Serbian, and Georgian. His missions took him across the globe, flying in both props and jets during the Gulf War, Kosovo, and the Global War on Terror. These reconnaissance flights were high-stakes, high-pressure, and vital to national security. Jason’s linguistic skill and technical expertise helped keep operations informed, aligned, and safe.

A Mindset Built in Service

When asked what lesson still guides his daily life, Jason shares a philosophy that has shaped his entire professional approach:

“If you are 15 minutes early – you’re on time. If you’re on time – you are already late.”

It’s more than punctuality, it’s preparedness, respect, and accountability. For Jason, that mindset seamlessly carries into his work at Smartlink.

Carrying Military Standards Into Smartlink

Jason’s military experience taught him the importance of accuracy, quality, and operational awareness. At Smartlink, he applies those same standards to every project:

  • “Crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s.”

  • Seeing mistakes quickly and correcting them for the next person.

  • Maintaining the discipline and thoroughness expected in the field.

His background gives him a unique ability to anticipate issues, solve problems proactively, and support his team with the same reliability he showed in the Navy.

What Veterans Day Means to Him

For Jason, Veterans Day is about connection and commitment:

“Brotherhood/Sisterhood. Reaching out to those who have served with, before, and after me, knowing that we will always have each other’s backs, regardless of branch or service.”

It’s a lifelong bond built on shared sacrifice, shared missions, and shared values.

Advice for Fellow Veterans

To those transitioning into civilian or corporate life, Jason offers clear guidance:

  • Take advantage of VA and branch-specific Transition programs.

  • Pursue your degree early, while in service or soon after.

  • Remember that military experience is powerful but pairing it with education and learning “corporate-speak” creates a true competitive edge.

Honoring His Family of Service

Jason also recognizes the generations of service within his own family, a legacy that spans nearly every branch:

  • His father – 20 years, U.S. Navy

  • His uncle – 24 years, U.S. Air Force

  • His cousin – 19 years, U.S. Air Force

  • His son – 5 years, U.S. Marine Corps

  • His wife – 32 years, U.S. Navy

Service isn’t just something Jason lived, it’s something his entire family embodies.
