Delivering Under Pressure: Supporting Historic Events on the National Mall

Some projects are defined by their scale. Others by their complexity. And some are defined by the ability of a team to accomplish in a matter of months what would typically take well over a year.

Over the course of three months, the Smartlink team supported an unprecedented series of four major events on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., culminating with the Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar Race. These highly visible events brought significant attention and crowds to the nation’s capital, creating an equally significant need for reliable network performance for both commercial users and FirstNet customers supporting public safety operations.

Behind that connectivity was an extraordinary amount of planning, coordination, problem-solving, and execution.

An 18-Month Challenge Delivered in Less Than Three

Projects and events of this magnitude would typically require 18 months or more of planning and execution. For this series of events, the team had less than three months to plan, design, permit, and deploy multiple network assets, including several in entirely new locations.

Each event also brought different requirements, stakeholders, agencies, promoters, locations, and logistical considerations. Plans evolved quickly, agency requirements shifted, and new challenges emerged throughout the process.

Rather than allowing the complexity to slow progress, the team remained focused on finding solutions and keeping the program moving forward.

Performance When It Mattered Most

The ultimate measure of the work came when the events began and the network was put to the test.

Following the final IndyCar Race event, network metrics were categorized by our customer as “GREAT performance” for both commercial and FirstNet customers.

That performance was particularly meaningful given the environment in which the network was operating.

With large crowds gathering for highly visible events in Washington, D.C., reliable connectivity needed to serve more than everyday network demand. FirstNet customers also depended on mission-critical network reliability to support public safety operations and provide the connectivity needed to respond to unforeseen circumstances.

Partnership That Makes the Difference

While the technical results speak for themselves, some of the most meaningful feedback from the project centered on how the work was accomplished.

Our customer specifically recognized the team’s leadership, professionalism, positive attitude, collaboration, and relentless commitment to helping the broader team succeed, noting:

“Smartlink is the only partner that could have helped us navigate these unique site acquisition challenges along the National Mall.”

That recognition represents what we strive to bring to every customer engagement.

At Smartlink, partnership means more than completing an assigned scope. It means understanding the larger objective, taking ownership when challenges arise, staying flexible when circumstances change, and working alongside our customers to determine what needs to happen next.

Sometimes that means following a carefully developed plan. Other times, it means quickly developing a new one.

Turning an Unprecedented Challenge into a Remarkable Success

Four major events. Three months. Multiple new network assets. Numerous agencies and stakeholders. Constantly evolving requirements.

The successful completion of this deployment was the result of an exceptional collective effort.

We are incredibly proud of the Smartlink team members who contributed to this work and grateful for the trust and partnership of our customers and everyone who played a role in bringing these events to life.

The project demonstrated what is possible when experience, collaboration, adaptability, and a commitment to execution come together, even when the timeline says it shouldn’t be possible.

Complex challenges. Compressed timelines. Exceptional execution. That’s the power of partnership.
